SEATTLE, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Starbucks Corp. announced Friday its plan to open up smaller "express stores" in an attempt to cater to busy commuters and improve speed of service.

The stores will have smaller food and beverage menus and will rely on its digital payment, mobile ordering systems and apps to streamline service. The company is looking to build on the higher sales growth seen by its stores with drive-through service, which currently represent 40 percent of Starbucks' U.S. stores.

The coffee giant also announced its intent to open no less than 100 new stores over the next five years dedicated to its Starbucks Reserve small-batch arabica coffee line, reports the Wall Street Journal.

As of July, Starbucks had 20,863 stores across 64 countries.
