SEATTLE, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Reports suggest Amazon is set to launch its own version of an internet-to-tv set-top box, that will allow users to stream online content directly to their televisions.

Tech news website Re/Code reports that the product will run on Google's Android OS, similar to the one running on Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet. The device will have to compete with similar streaming products from Apple and Roku, as well as Google Chromecast to a lesser extent.

Speculation was rife last April, that Amazon would release the box in time for Christmas 2013, but it seems they had to delay the project.

Its not clear if the device will run games, but the recent acquisition of Double Helix Games and the hiring of game developers suggest it may support gaming.

Amazon at present is providing its Prime users with video streaming. According to Amazon, subscribers can stream 150,000 movies and TV episodes, and the company has been creating original content as well. The next logical step would be to allow users to stream this large inventory of video on a television and that seems to be the decision Amazon has made.
