New home prices rise nominally in Canada in December

OTTAWA, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- New home prices in Canada rose nominally in December, Statistics Canada reported Thursday.

Home prices have made little movement in several months. In November, they were flat. In December, prices rose 0.1 percent, StatsCan said.

In the last month of the year, the sharpest gains among Canadian cities were posted by Toronto, Oshawa and St. Catherines-Niagara, all of which are in Ontario and all of which posted modest gains of 0.2 percent.

Prices fell 0.3 percent in Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo, also in Ontario. For the region, it was the largest decline since May 2010. The drop was attributed to some builders offering free upgrade packages to stimulate sales, StatsCan said.

Out of 21 cities monitored, 11 reported no price changes in December, StatsCan said.
