ROSELAND, N.J., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- U.S. private-sector employment rose by 175,000 in January, just shy of the 180,000 that economists had forecast, Automatic Data Processing said Wednesday.
ADP said 12,000 manufacturing jobs were added to the economy in January. The construction sector added 25,000. The financial sector was flat in the month, the firm said.
January's total is the smallest since August 2013, when 151,000 new private-sector jobs were added to the economy.
The firm, on Wednesday, revised December's total from 238,000 to 227,000.
The payroll firm's monthly report is issued two days before the Labor Department's monthly Employment Situation report, which includes public sector jobs and determines the closely-watched monthly unemployment rate.
ADP said firms with fewer than 50 employees added 75,000 jobs in January, while firms with 500 or more employees added 34,000. Companies in the middle of the pack added 66,000 jobs in the month.
