Russia to discuss joining U.S. tax evasion pledge

MOSCOW, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Russian Finance Minister Alton Siluanov confirmed talks with the United States on cooperative tax evasion counter-measures are to resume next week.

"We have a few reservations on the Russian side. There are still some points to agree on with our American counterparts," the finance minister said Friday.

The two countries began talks last year aimed at having Russia sign onto the U.S. 2010 Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which mandates foreign banks report information about clients who should be paying U.S. taxes to U.S. authorities.

Fourteen other countries have pledged cooperation with the law that takes effect at the end of June, RIA Novosti reported Saturday.

Russia said it was seeking a deal that was "mutual and balanced," but balked at making Russian banks subject to a U.S. law.

The head of Russia's central bank, Alexei Simanovsky, said an agreement between the two countries would come into affect this year, countering reports that Russia was not going to pledge its support until 2016, RIA Novosti said.
