Markets flat Monday

NEW YORK, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. markets were flat Monday with no major economic reports to influence investors.

After a surge Friday provoked by the unemployment rate drop to 7 percent, stock gains were muted Monday.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 5.33 points or 0.03 percent to 16,025.53. The Standard & Poor's 500 added 3.28 points or 0.18 percent to 1,808.37 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 6.23 points or 0.15 percent to 4,068.75.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,538 issues advanced while 1,533 declined on volume of 3.1 billion shares traded.

On foreign markets Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 350.35 points or 2.29 percent to 15,650.21. In Europe, London's FTSE 100 added 7.49 points or 0.11 percent to 6,559.48.

The 10-year treasury note gained 3/32, yields dropping to 2.845 percent.

The dollar fell to 103.23 yen while rising marginally against the euro, which traded at $1.374.

Gold was up $10.60 on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, at $1,239.60 per troy ounce. Silver added 32 cents to $19.85.

In after hours NYMEX trading, crude oil dropped 53 cents to $97.12 per barrel.

On the Chicago Board of Trade, March corn added 2 3/4 cents to $4.37 per bushel. January soybeans added 18 1/4 to $13.43 3/4 and March wheat lost 3/4 to $6.50 1/4.
