FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Shipments of traditional PC computers will decline this year at a double-digit pace with no significant recovery expected, a U.S. market researcher firm says.
Research company IDC said the expected 10.1 percent sales decline represents the "most severe yearly contraction on record," ZDNet reported Monday.
There's little likelihood of the traditional desktop and notebook market showing positive growth beyond device replacement as the world increasingly turns to tablets and mobile devices, IDC researchers said.
Even in emerging markets, where increasing growth had been the norm, developing countries were joining the stampede away from PC's with shipments expected to decline in 2014, they said.
Tablets are leading the charge that's overwhelming traditional PCs, IDC's Loren Loverde said.
"The Windows-based tablet market is expected to grow to 39.3 million units in 2017 from less than 7.5 million in 2013 and less than 1 million in 2011," Loverde said.
