Wholesale sales climb in Canada

OTTAWA, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Wholesale trade sales rose modestly in September, climbing for the third consecutive month, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday.

Sales rose 0.2 percent among wholesalers, reaching $49.8 billion in the month.

The largest gains were in the miscellaneous subsector, where sales climbed 1.3 percent, pushed by a 4.3 percent rise in the sale of agricultural supplies.

Motor vehicle and parts sales rose for the fourth month out of the past five, rising 0.6 percent in September. Gains were especially strong for vehicle parts and accessories, where wholesale sales increased 3 percent, the largest rise since October 2012.

StatsCan said sales in the farm product subsector rose 4.8 percent for the fifth consecutive monthly gain.

The largest drop was posted by the food, beverage and tobacco subsector with a decline of 0.4 percent.
