Women say they were fired from Loehmann's for being too old

NEW YORK, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A lawsuit filed in New York City against clothing chain Loehmann's alleges the store fired three plaintiffs because they were too old.

The suit was filed last week in Manhattan Supreme Court by Angela Fletcher, 54, Bernice Lowe, 57, and Rosemary Mangum, 76, the New York Post reported.

The women allege that the store trumped up reasons to fire them; Fletcher was allegedly fired for working overtime, Lowe said she was let go after a false accusation from a fellow worker and Mangum, a 20-year customer-service veteran, was fired without warning for giving too many discounts, the lawsuit said.

Since CEO Steven Newman was hired in 2011, the store has been trying to cultivate a more youthful image, using young models for advertisements, and promoting younger employees in the press, the fired women say.

The suit alleges the women were "targeted for termination based on age."

Loehmann's has not commented on the case.
