First-time jobless claims drop by 6,000

WASHINGTON, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- First-time unemployment claims dropped by 6,000 to 331,000 in the week ending Aug. 24, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday.

The current four-week moving average rose by 750 to 331,250, BLS reported.

The prior week's first-time claims were revised higher to 337,000.

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Aug. 17 were in California with a gain of 5,867, Missouri, which added 1,757, and New Jersey with an additional 677 claims.

The largest decreases were in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Maryland with declines of 1,017, 899 and 722, respectively.
