Cannondale recalls pricey Slice RS bicycles

WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of about 500 high-end Cannondale bicycles with defective brake plates.

The brake plates on the 2013 model year Cannondale triathlon and time trial Slice RS bikes are involved in the recall. This includes Black Edition, Ultegra and Ultegra Di2 bicycles and frame sets.

The bicycles were sold from October through June for between $5,500 and $11,000 for the bicycles, and about $4,500 for the frame sets.

The bicycles were imported from China by Cycling Sport Group Inc. of Bethel, Conn., where Cannondale, a subsidiary of Canadian conglomerate Dorel Industries, has its headquarters.

Consumers were advised in an announcement posted on the consumer watchdog's website Thursday to stop using the recalled bicycles and frame sets, and return then to a Cannondale retailer for a free repair. In addition, consumers were be given a Cannondale Terramo helmet and a jersey.
