Markets extend winning streak

NEW YORK, July 9 (UPI) -- Equity markets extended a winning streak in New York Tuesday in the early going of the second quarter reporting season.

Industrial giant Caterpillar shares rose 2.56 percent. Shares of Cisco Systems rose 2.09 percent.

Chevron added 1.74 percent.

On the Dow Jones industrial average, 25 of 30 components saw gains Tuesday.

The Dow closed up 0.5 percent, adding 75.65 points to 15,300.34. The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 19.43 points or 0.56 percent to 3,504.26 and the Standard & Poor's 500 added 11.86 or 0.72 percent to 1,652.32.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 2,266 stocks advanced and 802 declined on a volume of 3.1 billion shares traded.

In Japan, the Nikkei 225 added 2.58 percent or 363.56 points to 14,472.90. In Britain, the FTSE 100 added 0.98 percent or 63.01 to 6,513.08.

The 10-year U.S. treasury note was yielding 2.64 percent.

Gold added $12.60 to close at $1,247.50 per troy ounce. West Texas Intermediate crude oil added 52 cents in after-hours trading to reach $103.54 per barrel.

The euro rose to $1.2783 against the dollar. Against the yen, the dollar rose to 101.06 yen.

On the Chicago Board of Trade, December corn gained 19 1/2 cents to $5.20, November soybeans added 22 3/4 cents to $12.75 and September wheat added 13 1/4 cents to $6.76 1/4.
