Paul Tucker to leave Bank of England

LONDON, June 14 (UPI) -- Paul Tucker, the Bank of England's deputy governor, said he'll be leaving his post after 33 years with the bank, and after failing to advance to the top job.

Bank Gov. Mervyn King is set to retire at the end of June. But Canadian banker Mark Carney was chosen over Tucker to replace King.

The BBC said Friday Tucker's departure date is uncertain, but he would stay in his post to help Carney learn the ropes at the central bank.

"I'm very proud that, through the Bank and the wider central banking community, I have been able to make a contribution to monetary and financial stability," Tucker said.

He said it was "an extraordinary honor to serve at the Bank of England over the past 30 years."

The BBC reported Tucker plans to spend time in academia in the United States after he leaves the central bank.
