Employment agency: Web developer top job without college degree

CARLSBAD, Calif., June 3 (UPI) -- Some fields that do not require a college degree still hold promise for a satisfying career for U.S. workers, online employment agency CareerCast.com said.

In a report released Monday, CareerCast said the average median salary for its list of best jobs that do not require a college diploma came to $41,307 per year.

"To be sure, the top 15 careers in the Jobs Rated report requiring a bachelor's degree or more average $73,771 in annual median salary, but the cost of that education can easily exceed $200,000," CareerCast said.

And most do not shell out that kind of money for tuition. Nearly 70 percent of U.S. workers do not have a college degree, CareerCast said.

The agency's top pick for a career without a college degree is Web developer, a field it said has a median salary of $75,660.

Getting established as a Web developer might require persistence, CareerCast said.

It might require starting your own company and accepting less-than-optimum fees while building a client base but it can be done without the college diploma, the agency said.

Other non-degree jobs include communication equipment mechanic (median pay $54,710), electrician $48,250), industrial machine repairer ($46,686), paralegal assistant ($46,686), plumber ($46,660), auto body repair worker ($37,580), glazier ($36,640), administrative assistant ($34,660), bookkeeper ($34,040), pest control worker ($30,344), skin-care specialist ($28,920), receptionist ($25,250) and hair stylist $22,500), the report said.
