WASHINGTON, May 17 (UPI) -- North Dakota's unemployment rate of 3.3 percent remained the lowest in the country in April, the U.S. Labor Department said Friday.
North Dakota was followed by Nebraska with unemployment at 3.7 percent, Vermont at 4 percent, South Dakota at 4.1 percent and Iowa and Utah at 4.7 percent, the department said.
At the other end of the spectrum, Nevada has the nation's highest unemployment rate at 9.6 percent, followed by Illinois at 9.3 percent, Mississippi at 9.1 percent, California at 9 percent and North Carolina at 8.9 percent.
In Texas, unemployment in April came to 6.4 percent, putting it 17 spots behind North Dakota. In New York, No. 34 on the list, unemployment in April came to 7.8 percent.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics state-by-state report said 44 states had unemployment rate declines in April, while three had increases and seven were unchanged.
Nationally, the unemployment rate dropped to 7.5 percent in April, the lowest rate in five years.
Across the country, Texas added 33,100 jobs in April, the most of any state, followed by New York, which added 25,300 jobs and Florida, which added 17,000.
