Industrial production up slightly in Europe

BRUSSELS, May 14 (UPI) -- Eurozone industrial production rose 1 percent February to March, the European Union's statistical office Eurostat reported Tuesday.

In the larger European Union, production rose 0.9 percent, the data branch of the European Commission said.

Compared to March 2012, industrial production declined 1.7 percent in the 17-member currency region and 1.1 percent in the European Union.

From February 2013, energy production grew 3.8 percent in the eurozone and 3 percent in the European Union. Manufacturing of durable goods rose 1.9 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively, month to month. Non-durable goods production declined, however, sliding 0.7 percent in the eurozone and 0.2 percent in the 27-member European Union.

Industrial production rose in 16 nations and fell in seven. The largest gains were in Portugal, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, while the sharpest declines were in Slovenia, Bulgaria and Ireland.

Data weren't available for Belgium, Cyprus, Hungary and Austria.
