Alcoa workers jump in sea, part of protest

CAGLIARI, Italy, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Alcoa aluminum plant workers in Cagliari, Italy, jumped into the water to block a ferry from docking as part of a protest.

About 200 union workers were demonstrating in the port capital of Sardinia, the autonomous Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea, to protest a smelter shutdown.

Sources said demonstrators climbed a fence and jumped into the water Friday to stop a ferry from docking, Italian news service ANSA reported.

Union workers are protesting closure of a smelter at Alcoa's Portovesme plant.

It was unknown whether any workers were injured in the incident or if the ferry was allowed to dock.
