Kodak loses patent battle

WASHINGTON, July 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled against Eastman Kodak Co. in its patent case against Apple Inc. and Research In Motion Ltd.

The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday the decision was a setback for Kodak, which is mired in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is trying to raise billions in cash by selling off its intellectual property.

Kodak went to the ITC in early 2010, alleging the makers of the iPhone and BlackBerry infringed on its patent for previewing images with a digital camera. In its ruling late Friday, the commission dismissed the complaint, upholding a finding by one of its judges that the patent was invalid, the newspaper said.

The commission said neither Apple nor RIM had violated trade laws in the matter.
