Flushmate systems recalled

WASHINGTON, June 26 (UPI) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall Flushmate III pressure-assist flushing system due to high levels of pressure.

About 2,330,600 Flushmate systems were sold in the United Stated and 9,400 in Canada. They were made by Flushmate of New Hudson, Mich., a division of Sloan Valve Co.

Under pressure, a weld seam can burst and the pressure can shatter the tank, which posses a health risk, as well as involve property damage, the regulatory agency said.

The recall involves Series 503 Flushmate III Pressure Assist flushing systems installed inside toilet tanks.

The faulty systems were manufactured from October 1997 to February 2008. They are made of injection molded plastic and have 16-digit serial numbers in which the first six numerals are the date code.

The recall involves flushing systems with date codes beginning 101497 -- Oct. 14, 1997 -- through 022908 or Feb. 29, 2008.

They were sold nationwide for about $108.

Consumers were advised to shut off the water supply to the Flushmate III unit and stop using the system. Consumers should then contact Flushmate to request a free repair kit.
