NEW YORK, April 24 (UPI) -- Gold prices made gains Tuesday for the fifth consecutive trading day Monday, as the dollar index fell 0.21 percent.
Gold added $11.20 on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange to reach $1,643.80 per troy ounce.

Silver also headed higher, gaining 21 cents to reach $30.81 on the exchange.
The dollar index hit 79.20 in the International Exchange, as the euro rose to $1.3201 from Monday's $1.3158, while the British pound rose to $1.6146 from $1.6133.
Against the Japanese yen, the dollar rose to 81.32 yen from 81.19 yen. The dollar was at 7.7597 Hong Kong dollars from 7.7616.
