Grain traders contemplate early spring

CHICAGO, March 26 (UPI) -- Wheat and soybean futures rose Monday, while corn prices fell with traders second-guessing what an early planting season will do to U.S. crops.

Corn was off 4 1/4 to off 8 3/4, soybeans were up 8 1/4 to up 13 3/4, wheat was up 5 1/4 to up 6 and oats were unchanged to up 3 1/2.

Corn prices slid as weather remains favorable, some say, for an early planting season. Wheat, however, appeared vulnerable as the early start to the growing season could be set back by a seasonable snap back into colder weather. Soybeans would benefit from early corn planting, as fewer farmers would use soybeans as a backup crop planted during a delayed spring, which takes away growing days available for corn.

The prices:

Corn: May 6.37 3/4 off 8 3/4, Jly 6.36 off 8 1/2, Sep 5.76 1/2 off 5 3/4, Dec 5.53 1/4 off 4 1/4.

Soybeans: May 13.79 1/2 up 13 3/4, Jly 13.84 1/4 up 12 1/2, Aug 13.73 up 10 1/4, Sep 13.49 1/2 up 8 1/4.

Wheat: May 6.59 1/2 up 5 1/4, Jly 6.70 1/4 up 5 3/4, Sep 6.85 up 6, Dec 7.04 1/2 up 6.
