DETROIT, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Potential car buyers this weekend were flocking to Detroit's North American International Auto Show in the largest numbers in five years, event promoters say.
The Detroit News reports the show's first day Saturday drew 92,106 people, up from 86,622 last year and the highest in the past five years. Bill Perkins, chairman of the event said organizers are "absolutely thrilled" by the turnout.
"The week just keeps getting better and better, and we're so pleased to share all the excitement with so many people and families who joined us on opening day," he said.
If Adam Dettloff of Rochester is a typical show attendee, this year's event won't disappoint.
"It's a great show this year," Dettloff said. "It seems like for a few years the automakers had peeled back. The displays are impressive this year."
Michelle Hutchison, who was checking out cars for that might be a good economical and safety fit for her child who would soon be getting a driver's license, told the Detroit Free Press people's moods are on the upswing with the economy.
"I think the economy's growing, and I think people are starting to feel good," she said.
