WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Columbia Sportswear Company of Portland, Ore., is recalling 220 Omni-Heat lithium-polymer rechargeable batteries due to a fire hazard, regulators said.
The battery packs were sold as the power source for heating systems installed in jackets, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement.
The batteries, however, have a cell defect which can cause overheating, posing a fire hazard.
The recall involves battery packs included with the Omni-Heat Electric jacket styles.
The black battery packs are 3.25 inches long by 2.3 inches wide by 0.7 inches deep. The word "Columbia" can be found at the top and the word "OMNI-HEAT" can be found on the bottom of the pack.
The battery packs were sold online retail for $79. With jackets included, they were sold from July 2011 to September 2011 for $900 to $1200.
Consumers were advised to remove the battery pack from the jacket and contact the firm for instructions to return both battery packs for free replacements.
