LAS VEGAS, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Tamares Real Estate in Las Vegas said it was time to shutter the Western Casino after 41 years of operation.

"Due to decreased demand at this location," the firm said it would close the casino on Jan. 16, 2012, "for an indefinite period of time."

The firm will review its options for the property that has seen better days, the Las Vegas Sun reported Wednesday.

About 90 employees could be out of work, the newspaper said, although some workers may be moved over to the Plaza Hotel and Casino or the Las Vegas Club Hotel, both operated by Tamares.

The Plaza recently had a $35 million face lift.

Jonathan Jossel, Tamares' director of Las Vegas properties, said the firm has not given up on the neighborhood. "In fact, just the opposite is true."

"We believe that the ongoing redevelopment of the nearby East Fremont Street district and other exciting downtown developments and partnerships will continue to enhance the area around the Western, and we look forward to future growth," he said.
