Unemployment rate steady in Europe

BRUSSELS, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- The unemployment rate in the embattled eurozone was unchanged in August from July, holding at 10 percent, the European Union's data office said Friday.

In the 17-member region that shares the euro as currency, 15.7 million members of the workforce were unemployed in August, Eurostat said.

In the 27-member European Union, the unemployment rate was also unchanged from July, holding at 9.5 percent, with 22.7 million members of the workforce out of work.

Unemployment in the eurozone is down from 10.2 percent from August 2010. In the European Union, unemployment has fallen from 9.6 percent in that period.

The countries with the lowest unemployment rates in the region are Austria at 3.7 percent, the Netherlands at 4.4 percent and Luxembourg at 4.9 percent.

Spain, at 21.2 percent, had the highest unemployment rate in August.
