UAW, GM close to concluding talks

DETROIT, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Union leaders and U.S. automaker General Motors could have a contract ready before the current contract ends Wednesday, sources told the Detroit Free Press.

The United Auto Workers' four-year contract expires at one minute before midnight. After weeks of UAW leadership saying contract talks were going well, both the union and GM said talks could be concluded Wednesday, the newspaper said.

GM said in a statement, "We're continuing to discuss topics that are important to our employees and the company."

The Press said Chrysler is likely to be the next company in line for an agreement that could go to a membership vote.

Talks with Ford Motor Co. are not progressing as quickly, the Press said.

UAW leaders have said they would like to close the wage gap between new hires and established workers. They have also said with GM and Ford posting profits this year that they would hold the line on concessions, which were granted in years past when the automakers were struggling.
