Hyatt workers launch one-week strike

CHICAGO, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Hyatt Hotels Corp. workers said they had initiated a weeklong strike against the U.S. company after working without a contract for more than two years.

The strike would involve workers in four cities, including the Hyatt Regency Chicago and Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Crain's Chicago Business reported.

Previous strikes to protest the stalled contract talks have been scheduled for one day at a time. The weeklong strike that began Thursday was the first the union Unite Here has called that is set for more than 24 hours.

The union has referred to Hyatt as "the worst employer in the hotel industry." Hyatt, in turn, says Unite Here has signed contracts with other hotel chains that have compensation packages that are similar to Hyatt's.

In a statement, a company spokeswoman said the hotel chain "has been trying to give our employees the raises they deserve for two years, but Unite Here has stalled negotiations and refused to come to agreement with us."
