GM to go domestic with diesel Cruze

DETROIT, July 22 (UPI) -- General Motors Co. said the 2013 model of the Chevrolet Cruze would be available to U.S. consumers with a diesel or a gas engine.

The diesel version of the Cruze has not been sold in the United States on fears the diesel model, which is higher-priced, would not sell well, The Detroit News reported Friday.

But the Cruze Eco outsold all other compacts, including foreign rivals, in June and has a fuel efficiency rating that rivals all others in its class. It is rated at 42 miles per gallon on the highway and 28 mpg in city driving.

A diesel version is expected to do even better with a mileage rating that could reach 50 mpg, the newspaper said.
