Small iPad glitch: Identifiers that match

CUPERTINO, Calif., June 11 (UPI) -- U.S. technology giant Apple said it is recalling an unnamed number of iPad 2 tablets that have identical electronic serial numbers.

AllThingsD said Saturday that Apple had confirmed the glitch that would result in the recall.

One online Apple watcher, 9to5Mac, said one retailer had returned 100 iPad 2 tablets. Apple, however, would not give out a number.

"Duplicate MEID numbers were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad 2 units for the Verizon 3G network," an Apple spokesman said.

A MEID number is a mobile equipment identifier, which should be unique to each tablet.

That means there are 25 million iPad MEID numbers out there, as that is the number sold so far, the company said at a recent conference.
