Hailstorm hammers American Airlines

DALLAS, May 26 (UPI) -- American Airlines still had planes out of service Thursday, more than a day after a hailstorm hammered the Dallas-Fort Worth airport in Texas.

The airline reported 248 flights were canceled Thursday because of planes that were out of service, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. More than half of the cancellations, 146, were at Dallas-Fort Worth.

The total Wednesday was 732 canceled American or American Eagle flights, 328 of them departing from or arriving at Dallas-Fort Worth.

At least 62 American planes and 26 operated by the feeder carrier American Eagle required inspection after the storm.

"We have 18 planes out of service, which is a huge improvement from yesterday," American spokesman Ed Martelle said Thursday.
