NEW YORK, May 20 (UPI) -- U.S. bookseller Barnes & Noble said it would evaluate a purchase offer from Liberty Media Corp. that values the national retailer at about $1 billion.

Liberty's offer comes to $17 per share, a 20 percent premium above Barnes & Noble's closing stock price Thursday, the Los Angles Times reported Friday.

Liberty holds interest in a variety of media and retail businesses, including QVC cable channels, travel Web site Expedia, event planning Web site Evite and the Atlanta Braves baseball team, the Times said.

Barnes & Noble said the deal was contingent on keeping its chairman, Leonard Riggio, "both in terms of his continuing equity ownership and his continuing role in management."
