Survey says: $368 a month for gas

GAITHERSBURG, Md., May 5 (UPI) -- Households across the United States spent nearly a 10th of their income in April filling the gas tank of their vehicles, a survey released Thursday indicated.

On average, households spent about $368 a month on gasoline, the exclusive analysis of data by the Oil Price Information Service for CNNMoney indicated.

The study, which compared average gas prices with median incomes nationwide, indicated households spent about 9 percent of their total income on gas last month.

"Gas prices have just skyrocketed," said Fred Rozell, director of retail pricing at Oil Price Information Service, based in Gaithersburg, Md.

With gas prices surging nearly 30 percent this year, the AAA Fuel Gauge Report said the average price for regular unleaded gasoline was $3.985 Thursday.
