Detroit celebrates opening of hostel

DETROIT, April 18 (UPI) -- Hundreds of Detroiters turned out this past weekend to welcome a new hostel, the city's first to be built in 15 years.

Hostel Detroit had its official ribbon-cutting Sunday after a soft opening Friday, the Detroit Free Press reported. Michigan Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, other officials and a marching band came out for the festivities.

About 100 volunteers chipped in $25,000 and five months of labor to convert the building into a hostel, said 26-year-old founder Emily Doerr.

The hostel has 16 beds. Bunk beds will go for $18 to $27 per night and full- or queen-size beds for $40 to $45. There also is an apartment for monthly rental.
