Northrop Grumman to cut 500 jobs

BALTIMORE, March 3 (UPI) -- U.S. industrial giant Northrop Grumman Corp. said it would cut 500 jobs by the end of May to maintain its competitive edge.

"This work force action is regrettable, but unavoidable," Jack Martin Jr., a company spokesman said in an e-mail, The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday.

The jobs would be trimmed from the firm's Electronics Systems facilities in Linthicum. Md.

A year ago, 150 of the firm's workers in the area were let go.

Northrop Grumman said "delays and uncertainties" in the business environment were behind the layoffs.

As lawmakers look at trimming the federal budget, Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold said more job cuts were likely in the region. "Now we're in line to face some of those cuts that others in the private sector have faced," he said.
