CUPERTINO, Calif., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. technology giant Apple said it would drop all the app downloads available on its Mac OS X Web site on Jan. 6, when its Mac App Store opens.

The company's head of developer relations Ron Okamoto sent an email to developers informing them of the change, Computerworld reported Tuesday.

"Because we believe the Mac App Store will be the best destination for users to discover, purchase, and download apps," Okamoto said.

But the move will cause many of existing app programs to fall by the wayside, as the Mac App Store has restrictions not in play at Mac OS X.

All of the programs at the Mac App Store need to be compatible with the "currently shipping operating system," Apple said.

Apple has also said the apps available at the new site need to be fully tested and could not interfere with operating systems.

That leaves out apps now available that are considered demos and others that customize the Apple's operating systems.

Some have said the restrictions amount to a ban of many programs now available. At risk of not meeting requirements for the Mac App Store are the fourth and ninth most popular programs at Mac OS X Downloads, Computerworld said.
