Firing sparks 1-day Disney hotel strike

ANAHEIM, Calif., June 12 (UPI) -- Union leaders say Friday's strike at a Disneyland hotel was sparked by the firing of one of its more vocal members amid an ongoing contract dispute.

More than 200 members of Unite Here walked out for one day at the Anaheim resort in protest over the termination of a bartender who has been active in the union.

Three hotels were affected by the walkout but continued to operate. Anaheim is a major convention city in addition to being the home of Disneyland.

The Los Angeles Times said Saturday that the strike was the latest in a series of public protests held by Local 11, which represents about 2,100 Disney employees who have been working without a contract for more than two years.

MaryAnn Hegner, 23, described as one of Local 11's more active members, was fired recently from her job at Disneyland Hotel. Disney said Hegner was let go for using foul language, however Unite Here says the company was retaliating for her union activities.
