WASHINGTON, April 27 (UPI) -- The U.S. Treasury on Tuesday declared four Guatemalans connected to the Sinaola drug cartel as persona non grata, freezing their U.S. assets.
The official designation for Waldemar Lorenzana Lima and his sons, Eliu Lorenzana Cordon, Haroldo Lorenzana Cordon, and Waldemar Lorenzana Cordon is "Specially Designated Narcotics Trafficker," the Treasury said.
In addition to freezing their U.S. assets, the designation prohibits U.S. citizens from conducting business with the four.
U.S. President Barack Obama designated the Sinaloa cartel a drug trafficking organization in April under the Kingpin Act.
"Today's designation of Guatemalan drug traffickers from the Lorenzana family allied with the Sinaloa cartel allows us to open another battlefront against Mexican transnational drug trafficking organizations," said Office of Foreign Assets Control Director Adam Szubin.
Since June 2000, the OFAC has designated more than 600 businesses and individuals linked to 82 alleged drug kingpins, the Treasury said.
