EU construction spending drops

BRUSSELS, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The European Union's statistical office Eurostat said construction spending fell 1.1 percent in the euro area in November compared with October.

The euro area designates the 16 member states that use the euro as currency. In the full European Union, comprised of 27 member states, construction dropped by 0.6 percent October to November, Eurostat said.

From a year ago in the same period, construction outlays dropped 8 percent in the euro area and 6.7 percent in the EU27.

For the month, construction spending dropped most sharply in Slovenia, down 4.5 percent, followed by Spain, where spending dropped 3.5 percent. In several countries, construction spending rose in the month, including Slovakia, where outlays increased 13.7 percent.

On an annual basis, spending is down 24.4 percent in Romania, 22 percent in Bulgaria, 18.1 percent in Slovenia and 16.5 percent in Spain.

Annually, construction spending is up 8.8 percent in Poland, 6.4 percent in the Czech Republic and 3.8 percent in Germany.
