Apple gains market share in computers

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- The annual Household Penetration Study conducted by NPD Group said the percentage of U.S. households with Apple computers gained in the last year.

The survey revealed 12 percent of U.S. computer-owning households own a Macintosh computer, a 3 percentage point gain from a year ago, PC World reported Monday.

The average U.S. Apple computer owner is apt to have more electronic toys and more money than the counterpart PC user, the survey showed.

When asked what other gadgets they own, 85 percent of Mac owners indicated they also own a PC computer. Sixty-six percent of Mac owners indicated their home included three or more computers.

Sixty-three percent of Mac owners indicated they owned an iPod, compared with 36 percent of the general population who owned one. Eighteen percent indicated they owned a 50-plus-inch LCD TV, 10 percentage points more than the general population, the magazine said.

Why do Mac owners own more stuff?

"Thirty-six percent of Apple computer owners reported household incomes greater than $100,000, compared to 21 percent of all consumers," wrote Stephen Baker, NPD vice president of industry analysis.
