DHAKA, Bangladesh, March 16 (UPI) -- Garment manufacturers in Bangladesh said they asked for government support to keep the industry afloat during the global economic slowdown.
Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association demanded the government provide a 10 percent cash incentive based on export performance to prop up the country's largest exporting industry, The Daily Star reported Monday.
BGMEA President Abdus Salam Murshedy warned that delaying support would work against the industry as competing countries have already enacted support measures, the Star reported.
Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association President Fazlul Hoque demanded similar support. Annisul Huq, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries has asked for support for the garment industry, as well as for frozen food and vegetable exporting sectors, the newspaper said.
"We are running the factories just for survival. The government may give such facilities to the businessmen on interim basis," Murshedy said to the Star.
