TEMPE, Ariz., April 16 (UPI) -- US Airways says it's going to cost more to get a better seat toward the front of coach class on the low-cost Arizona airline's planes.
US Airways President Scott Kirby sent a memo to employees Wednesday telling them that beginning May 7 travelers who check in online can pay at least $5 extra to reserve an aisle or window seat in the first several rows of coach, The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported.
The Tempe, Ariz., airline is calling the program "Choice Seats." The fee will vary, depending on destination and length of flight.
About 8 percent of coach seats will be available, though the number may vary, Kirby said. The airline's shuttle service in the Northeast and Colgan-operated Saab 340 aircraft will not be part of the program, and the fee won't apply to the airline's referred customers program, he said.
The service may become available at airport ticket counters and kiosks later, Kirby said
