Egyptian officials warn protestors

CAIRO, April 6 (UPI) -- The Egyptian interior ministry Sunday warned anyone protesting rising food prices and low wages would be arrested.

Opposition groups used mobile phones and the Internet to call on people to wear black and boycott shops in protest of the economic situation in Egypt, where more than a third of the population exist on about $2 a day.

A group lead by the largest state-owned textile factory called for the demonstrations, the BBC said.

Although public protests are against the law, the BBC said many Egyptians may express dissatisfaction ahead of Tuesday's municipal elections as the economic situation grows dire.

The Egyptian interior ministry said in a statement it would not tolerate the general strike.

"The ministry's agencies will take the necessary and immediate firm measures against any attempt to demonstrate, block traffic, or hinder public services - or inciting any of these acts," the statement said.
