WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Defense Department was expected to ask Congress next month for funds to buy additional F-22 Raptor fighter jets.
The request, if granted, would extend the current $60 billion Lockheed Martin stealth aircraft contract for 183 jets, due to be completed in 2011, the Financial Times said Thursday.

The U.S. Air Force reportedly has been arguing that it needs 391 Raptors for future needs, including maintaining defenses against stealth aircraft being built by China and Russia.
