Danish truckers blockade bridge

HELSINGOR, Denmark, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Truckers in Helsingor, Denmark, blockaded a bridge into Sweden Monday to protest driving rules and fines, a Swedish Web site reported.

About 90 trucks were lined up by 7:30 a.m. Monday, preventing trucks and goods from moving across the Oresund Bridge into Sweden from Helsingor, about 28 miles north of Copenhagen, The Local reported.

Automobile traffic also was backed up.

"All cars are being let through, but it is going slowly," Jopas Wulff, traffic manager of the Oresund Bridge, told The Local.

Traffic in the other direction -- from Sweden into Denmark -- was not affected.

Protests began Sunday when drivers blocked the E45 highway between Denmark and Germany and then blockaded the town’s ferry port, preventing trucks from boarding ferries to nearby Helsingborg, Sweden.

The protest drew fire from unions and business owners, and Danish Justice Minister Lene Espersen urged an end to the blockades.
