Report: Foreigners taking new British jobs

LONDON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A new report from Britain's House of Commons library has found that between 1997 and 2006, more than half of the new jobs nationwide have gone to foreigners.

The study found during that time period, about 862,000 new jobs went to foreigners while only 731,000 employment spots, 46 percent overall, were given to British citizens, The Telegraph said Saturday.

Parliamentary Member James Clappison, who garnered the study's figures through a European Labor Force Survey, said the report shows the Labor Party is not fulfilling its duties as the nation's top political body.

He said the findings showed Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in particular, has not lived up to the promises he made before assuming his post.

"Gordon Brown's boast of British jobs for British workers is substantially hollow," Clappison said of the Labor Party head.

The newspaper said the study also found that while the number of foreigners in the British workforce increased 90 percent during the same time period, the number of employed British citizens only went up 2.8 percent.
