EU needs more skilled workers

BONN, Germany, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- The European Union is backing a plan to ease immigration within the EU.

EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner says the goal is to allow more legal migrants to take jobs within the 27-nation block, Deutsche Welle reported Monday.

The program would set up something called "mobility partnerships" that would allow people from outside the EU to enter legally for a specific period of time.

According to the labor needs of specific countries, the migrants could get a work visa, Ferrero-Waldner said.

The initiative is part of the EU's Strong Neighborhood Policy designed to create a ring of peaceful and economically-advanced states around the EU's borders.

It covers 16 countries including Ukraine, Moldova, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia and Israel.
