Rotten meat infiltrates German food

MUNICH, Germany, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- German prosecutors say about 150 tons of spoiled meat was sent from Bavaria and used in Berlin to make Turkish-style kebabs.

The amount of rotten kabobs sold to the public by grocers and restaurants in eight German states is thought to be much larger than previously suspected, Deutsche Welle reported Saturday.

Instead of the 31 tons previously reported, investigators Friday said between 140 tons and 160 tons of rotten meat had been shipped from Bavaria to various Berlin food companies since June 2006.

A truck driver tipped off investigators about the meat, which was deemed "unfit" for human consumption before it was shipped, Deutsche Welle said.

Federal Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection Minister Horst Seehofer urged harsh punishment for the circumventing of consumer protection laws.
