Spanish firm wins Serbian highway contract

BELGRADE, Serbia, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Serbia's government said Thursday a Spanish construction firm is likely to get a concession for construction of a major highway section.

A government statement said a consortium of the Spanish FCC and Austria's Alpine firms submitted the best offer to build a 200-mile section of the highway from Horgos, on the Serbian-Hungarian border to the central Serbian town of Pozega.

The government will soon begin talks with the Spanish-Austrian consortium on the construction, use and maintenance of the highway, Serbia's RTS radio-television reported.

Serbian Capital Investments Minister Velimir Ilic said the FCC firm bid $1 billion for the road concession and experts will now negotiate details before an agreement is signed.
