Airline cartel suspicions probed

LONDON, June 22 (UPI) -- British Airways said Thursday investigators from two countries are looking into possible price-fixing by BA and other carriers.

The U.S. Justice Department and Britain's Office of Fair Trading are investigating allegations of cartel activity that includes fuel surcharges, BA said in a statement.

"British Airways' policy is to conduct its business in full compliance with all applicable competition laws," the airline said. "British Airways is assisting the OFT and DOJ with their investigations."

BA also said Martin George, its commercial director, and Iain Burns, its head of communications, have been given leave of absence during the investigation.

Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic, AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and UAL Corp.'s United Airline said they also were cooperating with the investigation.
