Toyota boosting North American capacity

TIJUANA, Mexico, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Toyota Motor Corp. is boosting the capacity of a Mexican factory in the state of Baja California.

The expansion will increase production capacity of Tacoma pickup trucks by 20,000 units, for a total annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles and 200,000 Tacoma truck beds.

The increased capacity will require an additional investment of $37 million. The expansion is scheduled to be complete in 2007. Toyota is currently studying the amount of additional employment that will be needed to support the expansion.

The plant began operations in 2004 and produces Tacoma pickups for sale in the United States and Mexico. The plant also makes all Tacoma truck beds. Toyota's operations include welding, paint and assembly.

By 2008, Toyota will have annual capacity to build 1.83 million cars and trucks, 1.44 million engines, and 600,000 automatic transmissions in North America.
